Purpose of the Position

As a System Engineer at Aquafin, you are an indispensable link in the digital transformation of water purification in Flanders. You contribute to improving water quality and the effective management of water resources in our region. With your digital proficiency and technical expertise, you ensure that the IT infrastructure functions optimally and seamlessly aligns with technical and operational requirements.

You play a crucial role in interdisciplinary collaboration, utilizing your expertise in various projects to share knowledge and have a significant impact on IT developments within Aquafin.

Responsibilities and Tasks

As a System Engineer at Aquafin, you fulfill a crucial role in optimizing and managing the IT infrastructure, being involved in both project-based initiatives and daily operational activities. You are a key figure in striving for a secure, efficient, and reliable IT environment that supports Aquafin's objectives.

  • Initiating and leading projects: You are the driving force behind projects aimed at improving the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the IT infrastructure. This includes proactive projects stemming from your own insights as well as projects driven by colleagues within the IT team. You ensure a structured approach and successful realization of these projects.
  • Rollout of IT infrastructure components: You are jointly responsible for the rollout of IT infrastructure components, ensuring they function optimally and cost-effectively. This involves planning, implementing, configuring, and managing various IT infrastructure components to ensure a stable and reliable working environment, with seamless integration with existing systems.
  • Management role in O365 projects: You take on a management role in projects for the implementation, configuration, and management of the entire O365 suite. Here, you coordinate activities, set goals, assign tasks, and ensure successful execution of O365 initiatives. As an expert in O365, you optimize these solutions to enhance productivity and collaboration.
  • Keeping up with innovations: You stay up-to-date with the latest developments and innovations in IT infrastructure and can critically evaluate them. You actively participate in team decisions regarding the implementation of new technologies and innovations to continually improve and modernize the IT infrastructure.
  • Advising and supporting IT solutions: You advise and support in the design of IT solutions, with a focus on security, maintainability, continuity, and flexibility. You ensure that proposed solutions meet the highest standards in terms of security and operational efficiency.
  • Collaboration with external partners: In close collaboration with external parties, you work on innovative solutions, particularly in the field of cloud technologies. You contribute to the design, implementation, and management of these solutions to support Aquafin's digital transformation.
  • Advisor for architects and development: You act as an advisor for architects and the development team, influencing the roadmap of IT platforms. With your technical expertise and insights, you contribute to the development and improvement of IT solutions.
  • Management of network equipment, virtualization environments, and firewalls: You optimize, manage, and maintain network equipment, virtualization environments, and firewalls, with a focus on performance, reliability, and security.
  • Management of Microsoft SQL databases: You contribute to the management of Microsoft SQL databases, ensuring they perform optimally and meet Aquafin's requirements for data storage and management.
  • Monitoring, tracking, and 3rd line support: You are responsible for daily monitoring, tracking, and 3rd line support via ticketing, proactively addressing incidents and issues by developing structural solutions to ensure continuity of IT services.


Experience and Background

  • You hold a relevant master's or bachelor's degree and/or at least 5 years of experience in a similar role.
  • You have experience in leading IT infrastructure projects.
  • You possess strong expertise in configuring, managing, and implementing the entire O365 suite, including SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Power Suite, Exchange, MDM/MAM, and security features such as user management, rights management, and Conditional Access.
  • You have expertise in managing and maintaining on-premises components, including networking (switches, routers, WiFi), VMware/vSphere, Fortinet firewalling, NetApp storage, Microsoft SQL, and core services (AD, DNS, DHCP, PKI, ADFS, WSUS, VPN).
  • Knowledge of Azure cloud is a strong plus.

Aquafin, headquartered in Aartselaar, is a leading company in Flanders responsible for water purification and the management of the sewage system. Established in 1990 by the Flemish Region with the aim of expanding, operating, and pre-financing water purification infrastructure in Flanders, Aquafin is a public limited company with the Flemish Participatiemaatschappij NV as its sole shareholder.

With the goal of preventing waterlogging and reducing ecological damage, Aquafin strives to make wastewater and stormwater systems future-proof. Managing 325 sewage treatment plants, Aquafin purifies the wastewater of as much as 86% of Flemish residents, significantly improving the quality of waterways. In addition to treating household wastewater, Aquafin also provides water purification solutions for the industry through its subsidiary, Aquaplus. It is responsible for designing, building, and operating water treatment plants that utilize advanced purification techniques to remove various pollutants from wastewater. The purified water is then safely reintroduced into the natural water cycle.
