Senior System & Network Engineer @ Seafar

AMCV04036

Function

The Senior System & Network Engineer role at Seafar is pivotal in shaping Seafar’s IT landscape and driving its ambitious growth in the innovative domain of autonomous shipping. The Senior System & Network Engineer will work with a "clean slate," giving  the freedom and responsibility to implement robust IT solutions and contribute to the company’s rapid scaling efforts.

The primary purpose of this role is ensuring that Seafar’s networks remain operational and secure at all times. With a total fleet of 50 remotely operated vessels, connectivity remains one of the most pressing technical challenges, especially during cross-border transitions. The engineer will need to develop strategies and implement sustainable solutions to maintain seamless connectivity, ensuring that no vessel is left without remote guidance.

Tasks and responsibilities

Managing IT for Remote Operations and Vessel Control

  • Contribute to the architectural design and implementation of IT infrastructure.
  • Define and establish future-ready IT systems, focusing on high-performance hardware and network solutions, including firewalls, switches, 4G/5G/satellite connectivity, and vessel-specific integrations.
  • Lead the configuration and deployment of software solutions across a fleet of remotely operated vessels, emphasizing cutting-edge automation and control technologies.
  • Support  a resilient and scalable cloud strategy using Azure IaaS and PaaS platforms, helping optimise deployment pipelines and ensuring alignment with the company’s rapid growth trajectory.
  • Shape IT standards and best practices to accommodate Seafar’s expanding operations, crafting policies that prioritize innovation, security, and efficiency.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of a robust network monitoring system to ensure uninterrupted operations and safeguard against potential disruptions, particularly in high-stakes remote control scenarios.

Developing and Maintaining Documentation

  • Drive the creation of comprehensive, forward-looking documentation for all IT systems, including deployment blueprints, operational protocols, and architectural guidelines.
  • Develop and refine station and vessel software usage manuals for operators, enabling seamless adoption and operation of new technologies.

Internal IT Infrastructure and Policies

  • Architect and optimize internal IT infrastructure, ensuring seamless operations and future scalability.
  • Implement advanced monitoring systems (e.g., Zabbix, PRTG) to proactively detect and address potential bottlenecks or security concerns.
  • Define and maintain a secure and user-friendly environment for internal IT systems, including laptops, multi-factor authentication, and resource tracking tools.

Internal & external stakeholder contact
A significant part of the Senior System & Network Engineer is collaborative project work (e.g. facilitating complex setups for clients and partners).

  • Internal: Software team, Operations (captains working for seafar), working closely with the CTO.
  • External: Operations manager (Remote Navigation, captains working for the clients), subcontractors, network providers, etc. Once a solution is purchased, the IT team steps in to handle the intricate configurations required to integrate the technology seamlessly. This includes aligning with various stakeholders to create a harmonious and functional environment for all involved parties.

Profile

Seafar is evolving from a startup into a well-structured scale-up, and this role is integral to that transition. The engineer will play a leadership role in defining and executing the strategic IT planenhancing IT infrastructure, and setting up systems to support the company’s rapid growth. Currently, the Senior System & Network Engineer will have a clean slate for the office IT environment. While the software development side of Seafar has advanced technology in place, the internal IT structure is largely undeveloped, presenting significant opportunities to build and optimize processes.
