Senior Data Scientist @ BASF



As Senior Data Scientist your responsibilities include the following:

  • You manage complex and challenging projects in a diverse, cross-functional and multi-cultural environment.
  • You support end customers in operations and services by identifying data-driven insights using statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualisation techniques.
  • You share and discuss insights with a variety of project stakeholders.
  • You inspire the team about new technological trends, in the field of data analytics and machine learning, that have a great potential impact for BASF Antwerpen.
  • You participate in the planning of the development of data analytic solutions from initial design idea to implementation, prototyping and testing.
  • You provide a scope out and / or break down of problem sets and hypotheses for the analysis of business problems.
  • You integrate and prepare large and varied datasets and model complex business problems using advanced statistical modelling, data mining and machine learning methods to facilitate data analysis.
  • You design and evaluate experiments to test data assumptions.


  • You have a master's degree or doctorate in engineering, physics or chemistry. 
  • You have insight into business: analysis of business requirements, knowledge of the business domain, insight into business processes, decision-making and systems, effective communication with business and technical users.
  • You have an understanding of Data: analysing and testing data quality, mapping data to business requirements, collecting and examining data.
  • You can summarise and explain a complex concept to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Working in a team is second nature to you.
  • You are familiar with various data science / data mining techniques, such as: supervised and non-supervised machine learning, statistical analyses, concepts, linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, K-nearest neighbours, unsupervised machine learning, association rule mining, hierarchical & partitional clustering, dbscan, self-organizing maps, principal component analysis.
  • You show an extensive knowledge of statistical and data-analytics techniques. You have a good knowledge of Python and/or R. Knowledge of JMP® is a plus.
  • Possession of a Lean Six Sigma certification is a plus.
